Congressman Davis supports Internet Tax Freedom Act of 2007

October 16, 2007

Washington, DC -- Congressman David Davis voted in favor of H.R. 3678, the Internet Tax Freedom Act of 2007.

“This legislation extends the moratorium on Internet taxes until November 1, 2011,” Congressman David Davis said. “We should not be taxing access to the internet.”

The Internet Tax Freedom Act was enacted on October 12, 1998. The legislation, introduced by Representative Christopher Cox (R-CA), placed a three year moratorium on state and local governments imposing taxes on Internet access or e-commerce. It also grandfathered in any taxes collected and enforced before October 21, 1998.

“In today’s economy, we can use every aspect of growth, including e-commerce,” Congressman Davis said. “The quickest way to stifle this tremendous growth is to create a new segment of taxes. I would like to see this tax prohibition made permanent”

The moratorium has been extended twice, most recently by the enactment of the Internet Tax Nondiscrimination Act on December 3, 2004. This legislation extended the moratorium and the grandfather exception until November 1, 2007.
