CONGRESSMAN DAVIS’ RESPONSE TO PRESIDENT BUSH’S FINAL STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS

Audio with Marc Bernier is Attached

January 28, 2008

Washington, DC -- Congressman David Davis tonight issued the following statement regarding the President’s seventh and final State of the Union Address:

Economy:  “The recent plan unveiled by President Bush to help our economy is practical and effective.  My view has always been that the government cannot tax and regulate the people of America into prosperity.  Cutting taxes, providing incentives to businesses and families, and not adding needless layers of bureaucracy to our government is the common sense way to approach an economic boost.  The principles set forth will provide the foundation for an economic growth package that families and businesses of Tennessee’s First District can immediately benefit from.  We should also reduce needless spending from the government.  Needless, out of control spending in Washington is a massive contributing factor to our national debt, and 1st District Tennesseans should not be forced to pay for ‘bridges to nowhere’ or hippy museums in New York.”

Military and Military Families:  “Being from Tennessee, the Volunteer State, I volunteered to visit our Troops abroad in July of 2007.  Progress is being made in Iraq with the newly implemented strategy from General David Petraeus.  We owe eternal gratitude to our men and women in uniform and to the 41 million who fought in our wars dating back to the American Revolution, and I am happy to learn of the President’s plan to expand the support for families of the men and women serving in America’s Armed Forces.  President Bush plans to approve legislation that allows service members to transfer their unused Montgomery GI education benefits to their spouses and children.  He further plans to approve legislation that will expand preferential hiring practices for Veterans and members of the military seeking employment with the Federal government.”

Immigration:  “The President has asked for Congress to act on the issue of illegal immigration in the past.  My position on illegal immigration is simple:  Illegal means illegal.  If there is a guest worker program, I strongly stress the point of guest.  When I think of the word guest, I think arrive, work, and leave.  I have taken the initiative physically and legislatively as a Member of Congress.  I have visited our Southern border and have spoken with the Border Patrol Agents who do their best each day to keep America safe and I have signed-on to pieces of legislation such as the SAVE Act, and H.R. 2086 which will enhance the integrity of the United States against the threat of terrorism by providing our state and local law enforcement agencies with necessary immigration training through the Department of Homeland Security.”

Healthcare:  “Healthcare helps us protect our most sacred asset, life.  One way to protect our health is through having access to affordable and high quality healthcare.  Americans and First District Volunteers want the right to choose their healthcare plan, their hospital, their doctor, and their prescription drug plan.  Healthcare plans need to be chosen in the homes with personal deliberation, not in Washington, D.C. and the halls of Congress, as many wish were the case.  Tonight, the President called for the elimination of the unfair bias in the tax code against those who do not purchase their health insurance through their employers and I applaud the President for initiating this conversation, as it is a major step in allowing one to choose their own healthcare plan without limitations.”

Energy:  “With gasoline and crude oil prices soaring, it is time to find alternatives to the typical Washington solutions of taxing and regulating.  I have continuously supported clean coal technology, switchgrass initiatives, and many other safe alternative energy forms.  Recently, Representative Wamp and I held a forum on switchgrass technology and how it could benefit the residents of Tennessee.  It is time to break our dependence on foreign oil and bring a balanced approach to our energy needs in an environmentally friendly way.”
