ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS WILL NOT RECEIVE REBATE CHECKS

January 31, 2008

Washington, DC -- Congressman David Davis today issued the following statement on certain provisions in the economic stimulus:

The bi-partisan Economic Stimulus package that was authored and passed in the House on 1/29/2008 contains no provisions that would provide illegal immigrants rebate checks.  In fact, the House Economic Stimulus package that I voted in favor of has similar provisions to the 2001 and 2003 tax relief bills preventing illegal immigrants from receiving any benefits at all.  As the Senate takes up this piece of legislation today, I call on that body to prohibit illegal immigrants from benefiting at the expense of the American taxpayers.

“Illegal immigrants who steal or fabricate social security numbers to work in the U.S. will not be eligible to receive the rebate checks that hardworking American citizens will receive.

“Furthermore, an illegal immigrant who files taxes based on stolen or fabricated social security numbers is committing tax fraud and they should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

“My position on illegal immigrants remains simple:  Illegal means illegal.  Illegal immigrants should not be provided the same benefits that hard working American citizens receive whether it is a rebate check or discounted healthcare.
