DAVIS STATEMENT ON FY 2009 BUDGET

Families in East Tennessee will be forced to pay over $2,611 this year in brand new taxes because of the Democratic budget.

March 11, 2008

Washington, DC -- Congressman David Davis today gave the following statement on the House Floor this afternoon in response to the Democrat’s FY 2009 Budget Resolution.

With gas and food prices soaring to record highs, families in East Tennessee are struggling to make ends meet.

The Democrat’s Budget Resolution fails the test of fiscal responsibility miserably.  Instead of exercising fiscal restraint and lowering taxes, the Democratic budget raises taxes $683 billion dollars over the course of 5 years.  You heard me correctly, $683 billion dollars over 5 years!

This is the largest tax increase in America’s history, and it blows away the previous tax increase record in 1993 by over $443 billion dollars.

Families in East Tennessee will be forced to pay over $2,611 this year in brand new taxes because of the Democratic budget.  I can safely say that a majority of my constituents are strongly opposed to having an extra $2,611 dollars to pay each year in taxes alone.

I am supporting the Republican budget which addresses the bloated government in Washington, lowers taxes on our struggling citizens and families, addresses the unfunded liabilities to Social Security and Medicare, and reigns in the out of control spending in Washington.

I ask that my colleagues join me in supporting the fiscally sound Republican Budget – I yield back.
