Rep. Davis Statement on Foreign Import Safety

January 15, 2008

Washington, DC -- Congressman David Davis today issued the following statement today regarding foreign import safety:

In recent weeks, many First District Tennesseans have voiced their concerns with foreign imports.  Whether the imports are toys from China or food from Canada, they all need to be safe in order to guarantee the safety of every American citizen.  As your Representative, I will review any legislation concerning unsafe imports that will have an effect on the safety of Americans.

“I have signed on as a co-sponsor of H.R. 3477, the Safe Toys for Kids Act. The Safe Toys for Kids Act amends the Consumer Product Safety Act to require every manufacturer and labeler of anything used by children under 60 months of age to certify that the product is not banned or hazardous based on the assessment of a nongovernmental third party.  The Safe Toys for Kids Act is a vital step in guaranteeing the safety of our children.

“In December I voted in favor of H.R. 4040, the Consumer Product Safety Modernization Act, which passed by an overwhelming majority.  H.R. 4040 increases funding for the Consumer Product Safety Commission and expands its authority.  The bill also bans the sale of children’s products that contain more than trace levels of lead and requires third party inspections.  This also is a vital step in making certain that our children are safe.

“Also in December, I voted in favor of H.R. 3161, the Food and Drug Administration and Related Agencies Appropriations Act.  This bill has provisions that affect food imports that any one of us could be eating for dinner tonight.  H.R. 3161 provides funding for a comprehensive overhaul of the FDA’s food safety operations, provides funding to immediately hire addition import inspectors, and provides funding for rapid response capabilities should a food-related illness or disease occur.

“In my recent trip to the border at El Paso, Texas, I saw first hand the implementation of these three pieces of legislation and the effect they are having on the safety of every American, and I am proud to say that I am part of the increased safety efforts.
