Congressman David Davis applauds Bristol; visits community leaders in Washington

Washington, DC -- Congressman David Davis joined several community leaders from Bristol, Tennessee in celebration of the naming of Bristol as a member of the 100 Best Communities for Young People for 2007 presented by America’s Promise Alliance.

“I am pleased to congratulate the national leadership that has been shown in Bristol,” Congressman David Davis said. “The cornerstone for our future is the safety and well-being of our children.”

Bristol’s outstanding programs include: The Learning Center which serves students who are unable to function within a traditional middle or high school setting providing small group instruction and individual counseling. Among other programs, Bristol was chosen for their efforts in offering college credit for courses taken in high school, working across state lines with the Youth Build National program, offering youth leadership opportunities through Bristol Youth Leadership and Bristol Area Youth Council, and various other cutting-edge youth programs.

“Bristol, Tennessee was chosen for this prestigious award because of their efforts to enrich the lives of youth on a daily basis,” Congressman Davis said. “After meeting briefly with their leadership, it is obvious they have a heart for children and a determination to provide excellent services to youth of the First District.”


During a two-day Forum, attendees had the opportunity to hear from Alliance leadership on its new five-year campaign to improve the lives of 15 million disadvantaged young people with an emphasis on increasing high school completion rates. Also, there were educational sessions and workshops on: the importance of public policy, funding resources and supports for parents and caregivers, preparing kids for college and workforce, and successful strategies for working with at-risk young people much as those in foster care, the juvenile justice system or who have an incarcerated parent.
