| Washington, DC -- Congressman David Davis conveys support for the National Day of Prayer, which will take place on Thursday, May 3rd across the United States.
“The theme this year is ‘America, Unite in Prayer’,” Congressman Davis said. “I found in my life that there is nothing more powerful than prayer. Soon, there will be hundreds of thousands of people engaging in much needed prayer for our nation and its leaders.”
Since the first call to prayer in 1775, when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation, the call to prayer has been consistent throughout our history, including President Lincoln's proclamation of a day of "humiliation, fasting, and prayer" in 1863.
In 1952, a joint resolution by Congress, signed by President Truman, declared an annual, national day of prayer. In 1988, the law was amended and signed by President Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday of every May. Each year, the president signs a proclamation, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day.
Last year, all 50 state governors plus the governors of several U.S. territories signed similar proclamations.
“I will be joining the historic proceedings on Capitol Hill and I encourage everyone to engage in the local events during the National Day of Prayer,” Congressman Davis said.
The 56th Annual National Day of Prayer will take place Thursday, May 3, 2007. The theme for this year is "America, Unite in Prayer" and is based on the verse from II Chronicles 7:14 which states: "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
