Issues-Committee Assignments
- Education and Labor - The Education and Labor Committee and its five subcommittees oversee education and workforce programs that affect all Americans, from early learning through secondary education and from job training through retirement. Elementary education, higher education, adult education, US Department of Education, poverty programs, pension and retirement security, welfare reform, worker rights, and workers compensation, are just a few of the issues that are dealt with in the Education and Labor Committee.
- Homeland Security – The Committee on Homeland Security was established in 2002 to provide Congressional oversight for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and better protect the American people against a possible terrorist attack. The Committee was chartered to hold hearings and craft legislation for issues specific to homeland security.
- Small Business – The House Small Business Committee is charged with assessing and investigating the problems of small businesses and examining the impact of general business practices and trends on small businesses. The committee has oversight and legislative authority over the Small Business Administration (SBA) and its programs, as well as provides assistance to and protection of small businesses, including financial aid and the participation of small business enterprises in federal procurement and government contracts. I am also a member of two subcommittees.
- The Subcommittee on Rural and Urban Entrepreneurship - has general oversight of small business programs targeted toward urban and rural economic growth as well as general federal government entrepreneurial development programs, agriculture and energy issues.
- The Subcommittee on Contracting and Technology - has jurisdiction over the Small Business Administration’s contracting programs.
